Moistens, Soothes Digestive & Respiratory Tissues
For many of us the word “marshmallow” evokes memories of campfires with a white-sugary-thing we call a “marshmallow” stuck on the end of a stick and roasted to puffy gooeyness to smush into a S’more.
So, what is this plant called Marshmallow, and how can it possibly be connected with S’mores? There are other mallow plants, but this one was the mallow plant that grew abundantly in marshes, hence the name Marshmallow.
Marshmallow was used in ancient Egypt and Greece on a daily basis. It’s Latin name Althaea means “to heal” in Greek. It’s even written about in Homer’s Iliad written 2800 years ago!
Through the centuries, the marshmallow plant was commonly used for respiratory and digestive issues and even as a subsistence food.
The first “marshmallow candy” was actually made in ancient Egypt from the marshmallow plant’s root and was reserved for Pharaohs and Royalty and offerings to the Gods. It was the French in the 1800’s that invented today’s marshmallow candy by making a moldable confection with marshmallow root syrup, whipped egg white and corn syrup. By the early 1900’s, marshmallow treats had become commonly available. However, today’s puffy white marshmallows you make your S’mores with are marshmallows in name only and have never seen a drop of marshmallow root! Sigh.
You are in luck, though, because Cedar Bear’s alcohol-free Marshmallow Root with give you all the benefits that it was used for by the ancients without having to be related to the Pharoahs!
Marshmallow Root is best known for how it benefits the mucous membranes of the body. It is a highly mucilaginous herb (that means it’s gummy, slimy, or slippery) and sooths irritated mucous membranes. The leaves can be used, but the roots have the most mucilage and it is the roots that are used in herbal traditions to soothingly coat mucous membranes, cooling, protecting, and strengthening them. This mucilaginous quality moistens, soothes, and helps build and strengthen the lining and tissues throughout your gastrointestinal system, from your mouth clear through to the end of your colon. It also helps your respiratory system because it coats the throat and helps soothe and moisten dry respiratory tissues to help reduce dry, irritated coughs caused by dry, irritated respiratory tissues. Marshmallow Root also soothes and cools urinary system tissues and helps reduce excess water in the body, and the flavonoid antioxidants support the immune system and general health.
It’s not just the herb that makes Marshmallow Root so effective at soothing and moistening your digestive and respiratory tissues. Marshmallow Root single herb by Cedar Bear is made with Cedar Bear’s special proprietary process called the TincTract. Melanie’s Health & Nutrition really began with Auminay Naturals which was formerly SkinTastic Creations. This product line took root over twenty years ago as Melanie faced cancer. After becoming aware of alternative therapies she worked to change to a healthier lifestyle and learn about herbs. She developed what is now the Auminay Naturals product line by eventually learning to infuse these herbs into products that used natural ingredients to provide skin care products for a healthier lifestyle. In 2017, as a newly certified Master Herbalist, Melanie opened Melanie’s Health & Nutrition to provide a resource for the Tooele community. The Auminay products are now made in the back section of the store. Melanie and her staff love to serve the community and provide opportunities for learning, as well as products that empower people to be healthier.
