(Lobelia is not even remotely related to tobacco, which is Nicotiana tabacum.) It’s the other names that Lobelia has had that make you sit up and take notice. While there are over 300 varieties of Lobelia, it is Lobelia inflata that is used medicinally. Lobelia inflata is a small flowering plant that is native to the entire eastern North America that is the Indian Tobacco that native peoples used for respiratory and muscle issues, to clear the bowels, and as a ceremonial plant. 

Only the above ground parts are used. This is a very strong herb that has to be used with caution. 

One of Lobelia’s main uses is to help open the breathing passages and thin phlegm so it is easier to cough up. Small amounts of Lobelia have a sedative action that helps with relaxation and helps relax the respiratory system, nerves, and muscles. Larger amounts cause sweating, nausea, increased heart rate, and can cause serious vomiting. It was used in the 1800’s by the American Eclectic physicians to induce vomiting to quickly clear toxins from the body. (That’s how it got to be called Puke Weed.)

Lobelia has a chemical, lobeline, that has actions that are similar to nicotine. It has been used to help those that want to stop smoking tobacco, but only because it is a deterrent to tobacco use by causing nausea when tobacco is used. Lobelia may help reduce chemical dependencies.
